Homeland Security Grants
With the Homeland Security Act of 2002 came the opportunity for states to apply to the federal government for funding to improve the nations protection and response to a terrorist event. Once states secure federal funds a percentage is then awarded to counties with the same intent.
These funds began with federal fiscal year 2001 and as 2010; Darke County has been awarded $1,060,302.83.
Darke County Commissioner's established the Darke County WMD/Terrorism Planning Team in September 2002 to oversee the distribution of these funds as required by the Department of Homeland Security.
These funds are made a significant impact on Darke County's ability to respond to and recover from weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and/or terrorism event. The following diagram shows an overview of funds distributed to area disciplines (with some funds remaining to be spent):
